Pacific Islands Law Officers' Network
PILON is a network of senior public law officers from Pacific Island countries, including Australia and New Zealand, which focuses on common legal issues within the Pacific region. PILON was established in 1982 and holds meetings annually.
At the 25th meeting in Kiribati in February 2007, PILON changed its name from the Pacific Islands Law Officers’ Meeting (PILOM), reflecting members’ desire for emphasis to be placed on the information-sharing role of the organisation.
A review of PILON was presented at the 25th PILON, which endorsed the development of a formalised structure for PILON. Members agreed that a permanent Secretariat should be established, which in the interim is being hosted by the Australian Government Attorney-General’s Department.
The 26th PILON meeting was held in the Cook Islands in December 2007. The structure of PILON, its role and membership were formalised during the meeting. An Executive Committee was also endorsed. The committee is working with the interim Secretariat to guide its work throughout the year.
